Laundry Room Ladder

DIY, Organization, Room Design

I’m always trying to figure out ways to make my laundry room more functional, and I’ve seen ladders hanging from the ceiling in laundry rooms so I decided to give it a whirl.

My dad made the ladder, it’s 4 ft. x 17 in. with four 14 in. rungs, 1 ft. apart.

He came up with the idea to mount it to the wall with brackets, and did it in our last house, except this time we couldn’t find the right brackets, so we added 1 in. wood shims to make it fit. These brackets are 15 1/2 in. x 10 1.2 in.

I probably should have ordered the right size online, but I was anxious to get them up and you don’t even notice the shims after they were painted white.

And to maximize the hanging storage, I added some hooks and spray painted them to match the room.

And then I added a couple things below because being cute is important, too.

I don’t know about you, but it’s generally a party in my laundry room so…

Since I’m in this room daily, it really helps that it’s a little more organized and pretty! More updates on this room soon. 🙂

    Hi Debby,

I love the ladder your Dad made and how it is attached to the wall. Do you have general (or specific) measurements of the length of the ladder and how far apart the rungs are? Also, do you know the measurement of the brackets?

Also want to copy your hooks idea. : ]

    Thanks.

Hi, Rebecca! Thanks for your note – I will be adding this info in the post!

The ladder is 4 ft. x 17 in. with four 14 in. rungs, 1 ft. apart. The brackets are 15 1/2 in. x 10 1.2 in. and then we used 1 in. shims to make it fit. I should have ordered the right size (we had them in our last house), but I was anxious to get them up, haha. The hooks and knob are from Hobby Lobby – I sprayed them. Good luck and be sure to share when you’re done! 🙂

Thank you SO much Debby for responding to my questions so quickly! I just printed all the pictures you posted and now have the specific measurements to go with them.

Laundry room makeover is on my summer To Do list and may be getting moved up higher on my list now that I have your info. : ] I love the ladder idea but did not want to hang it from chains. Will start taking pictures so I have BEFORE and AFTER shots to show you.

        Thanks again. Rebecca

        Hi Debby,

Latest update regarding my simple “add drying rack” to laundry room project. Had drawn plans for layout and had all supplies.

Snag 1: when roofers put new roof on 18 months ago, they roofed over dryer vent in roof

Snag 2: wiring in wall behind dryer was configured so it had to be redone so dryer could be vented straight out into vent tube in wall, through attic and out roof

Snag 3: had to replace a stud in this wall = huge hole in drywall

Snag 4: took base board off so vent could be installed correctly. When tile was installed, base was left on and 1/4″ round base was added to cover gap between base and tile. Almost impossible to get base and trim off due to the way it was nailed.

Snag 5: decided to replace sink

Can’t find a light I like. Current track lighting isn’t attractive. Like pendant lights but they won’t work with shelving…

New plan includes replacing all base and door trim, sink, and am refiguring shelf design so pendant lights can work.

Will spare you pictures until it is finished.

It is still a dream… Rebecca Gunder

Hi again Debby – Doesn’t seem like it has been 3+ months since laundry room project was added to my To Do list. Little progress on it other than have most of the materials, including ceiling paint. Added “raising laundry room sink” to list so it will be level with top of washing machine with a small drying rack over it. Have paper pattern/template on wall to mark where shelves and rack will go so I can rearrange them if needed before painting. Oh, I did dismantle wooden step ladder to use parts of it for clothes hanging. One day….
